Winter Extras

American Revolution - As Occurred  in the Carolinas— Tom Phlegar, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a retired Colonel form the Army and the US Army Reserve, will provide a history of the events in the Carolina back country from early 1780 to the surrender of the British at Yorktown. Places such as Ramsour’s Mill, Buford, SC, Kings Mountain, Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse and others, all of which are a short drive away will be explored. He will also talk about the people and personalities involved on both sides. Not the military commanders, but literally the civil war that existed among neighbors and even among immediate families.

We will meet on Tuesday, February 18 from 10:30—11:30 AM at Sharon Presbyterian Church in the Chapel Room 202 (5201 Sharon Rd. 28210). The fee for this class is $10.

Books, Books, Books! Sally Brewster, owner of Park Road Books, will bring us up to date on what’s what in the literary world. What should we read this spring?  This would be a great outing for a book club.

We will meet on Monday, March 23 from 10:00–11:30 AM at the bookstore  (4319 Park Road—Park Road Shopping Center, between Julie’s and the drug store). Maximum 20 participants. The fee for this class is $10.

Charlotte Area Transit System - Courtney Schultz will present information about how to get around the Greater Charlotte area using bus, light rail, streetcar, special transportation and vanpool. We all need an update on these vital services—encourage a friend to register with you.

Probate—Can I Avoid It? Have you heard about probate  nightmares? No need to be scared. Elder Law Attorney Gregory S. McIntyre will talk about what probate is and how you may avoid it. Join us for a lively educational training and discussion. Bring questions!

We will meet on Thursday, February 6 from 10:30 —11:30 AM at Waltonwood Cotswold (5215 Randolph Rd. 28211). Class fee is $10.

Tax Assistance

Uncle Sam is due his money by Wednesday, April 15, 2020. Shepherd’s Center offers a Tax Assistance Program in partnership with AARP. Trained volunteers help seniors with their 2019 NC State and Federal Income Tax. All returns will be filed electronically; there will be NO paper returns. Appointments will be on held Mondays & Tuesdays at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, 28207, from February 3 and April 7. We will start taking calls for appointments January 15.
