the SHEPHERD'S CENTER of CHARLOTTE

About Us

Our Mission:

A senior citizen’s center dedicated to mobilizing active older people as volunteers, to offering programs to encourage learning and to offering services to older adults to aid them in remaining securely at home for as long as possible.

The Shepherd's Center of Charlotte, incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 1980 and has been operating in central Charlotte for twenty-seven years.

The Center's mission is to use the time and talent of senior adults to develop enrichment programs for active seniors and offer services for less independent seniors. The Center has 400 volunteers and six staff people, two full-time and four part-time.  One part-time person is a Senior Aide, paid by Title IV funds and administered by the Senior Center on Tyvola.

The Center is governed by a fifteen member Board of Directors. It is sponsored by forty-two congregations, in addition to financial support from businesses and foundations and gifts from individuals.

The Center's newest programs are its computer lab and computer loan programs. Its oldest program is a mini-college called Adventures in Learning which offers four six week sessions; fall, winter, spring and summer. The Center publishes four free Program Guides and four Newsletters a year mailed to about 4,500 people.
