Volunteer Opportunities at the Shepherd's Center
The Center relies on the time and talent of volunteers to accomplish its vital work.
For printed information about volunteer jobs available, please contact the Center at 704.365.1995. We will be glad to talk to you about your interests and availability and about the roles that volunteers play at The Center.
The Center especially needs drivers who can transport senior adults to the doctor and grocery store. Even one trip a month can make a significant difference.
We also need teachers for Adventures in Learning classes - volunteers who can share knowledge on a subject of some general interest. Classes are offered on Mondays in six-week sessions for one hour per week.
Computer knowledgeable volunteers are needed to serve as teachers and coaches for computer classes. The Introductory computer classes are offered in eight-week sessions, four times a year and coaches both teach and assist. Advanced short courses on Word, Excel, Internet/E-mail and our new Digital Imaging and Editing are offered at various times throughout the year.
The Center's Handyman program needs handyman volunteers who can make minor home repairs. Job requests are screened to ensure that jobs are within the capability of handyman volunteers.
Office volunteers make a significant contribution staffing a resource desk at the Center. They work as often as they wish for four-hour shifts. These volunteers answer the phone, take service orders, make appointments and do clerical work.
Tax filing volunteers work once a week from February through April. Volunteers are also needed to deliver hot meals which the Center participates in cooperation with Friendship Trays, Inc. Volunteers also serve on committees. For example, retired nurses and medical professionals serve on the Home Health Aide referral committee, which helps screen and refer Companion Aides to senior adults who are sick or incapacitated and need help to remain living at home.
While most of the volunteer jobs at the Center are filled by older adults, volunteers of all ages are especially needed to drive.
