Purpose of the Handyman Program
The Home Services Division of Shepherd's Center provides several services to help people 55 years of age or older live comfortably and securely in their own homes as long as possible.
One of the services, the Handyman Service, offers older homeowners and renters minor repairs to their home or its furnishings.
Who Can Use This Service?
Handyman Service is available to persons 55 years of age and over who live in a Target Area. The Target Area is bordered by Independence Boulevard on the North, South Boulevard on the West, Tyvola, Fairview, Sardis and Rama Roads on the South and Monroe Road on the East.
Is There A Charge For This Service?
There is a $15.00 per hour charge, one hour minimum, paid to the handyman at the time the work is done. This money goes to defray small expenses the handyman might have. Consultation is also $15.00 per hour with a one hour minimum.
Homeowners pay for all materials necessary to complete the job.
How Do You Get Handyman Service?

A handyman will call you to learn more about the job and to make an appointment for the service call.
What Services Can Handymen Perform?
Handymen do minor repairs, repairs which are not covered by the building code. For example:

- Repair door bells
- Change furnace filter
- Replace light bulbs (normal ceilings)
- Repairs lamps and light switches
- Plaster Patching
- Caulking windows and tubs
- Minor furniture repair
- Hang pictures, install shelves

If the job is too big for a handyman, he or she can act as a consultant, giving information about professional services.
Are you Handyman Material?
The majority of Handymen are retired men who like to make small repairs and home improvements and are willing to share their time and skill with other older adults.
If you want to join this much needed service as a volunteer, contact The Shepherd's Center, 704.365.1995 or plampel@shepherdscharlotte.org. You will receive a Handyman application to complete and return. This form lets us know your specialties and how often you can work.
