Grocery Shopping and Errand Service

Grocery Shopping and Errand Service

This service helps older people live independently in their own homes by providing transportation for grocery shopping and essential errands (bank, post office and hair dresser) for people who do not have access to other transportation.

Who can use this service?

Service is available to persons 55 years of age or older who are ambulatory.

Transportation is available in a target area which is bordered by Independence Boulevard on the North, South Boulevard on the West, Tyvola, Fairview, Sardis and Rama roads on the South and Monroe Road on the East.

A spouse, relative or friend is welcome to accompany the rider.

When are rides available?

Rides are available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am to 12 noon and from 1 to 4 pm.  We ask riders to be flexible in timing their errands, in order to take advantage of the driver’s availability.

How do you get this service?

Call The Shepherd Center of Charlotte’s office at least three days before the date of your trip.  The number is 704.365.1995 or plampel@shepherdscharlotte.org; office hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.

This is a free service.  However, the Center welcomes donations in any amount.  (When people ask us for guidance, we suggest a $10.00 donation.

How to become a driver

One trip a month by a volunteer driver can make a great difference in the life of an older person.  Volunteer drivers should be willing to serve for one year, must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license and required insurance.  A chauffeur’s license is not necessary.

The Center purchases excess auto liability insurance for drivers. This insurance extends the limits of the driver’s own policy.

Handicapped License tags are available to Volunteer Drivers.
